2. Departure from the Swabians
Coach Markus Weinzierl is leaving FC Augsburg this summer. The 47-year-old announced this decision on Saturday after the Bundesliga game against SpVgg Greuther Fürth on the TV channel “Sky”. Weinzierl’s contract expires at the end of June. That was his “last game,” he said. For him it was the “right decision”.
Weinzierl informed the team of his move shortly after the final whistle. Players should be the first to know. The football teacher pointed out that there had been no talks with the club about his future. Managing Director Stefan Reuter was not privy to his decision, said the former Schalke coach and revealed clear cracks in the relationship. “It wasn’t planned that way,” said Weinzierl. “My heart hurts too.” He would have liked to have stayed in Augsburg for a long time.
For Weinzierl it is the second departure from the Swabians after he decided to move to FC Schalke 04 in 2016 after four years in office. Born in Straubing, he returned to his old place of work in April 2021 and saved FCA from relegation – just like last season and this season. In 38 competitive games, he averaged just 1.16 points – 0.14 fewer than in his first term.
Last Thursday, Weinzierl pointed out problems between him and the club for the first time and left his future open. “I also have one or two questions that are decisive. What are the goals? What are the requirements?” he said.
FC Augsburg: Will Maassen come from BVB II as Weinzierl’s successor?
The “picture‘ brought Enrico Maassen from Borussia Dortmund II into play as a potential successor shortly after the decision was announced. The 38-year-old is under contract with the black and yellow third division team until 2024. There have been rumors all season about Maassen moving to a higher league.
