FAVV calls on to stop eating Kinder Surprise eggs after multiple salmonella outbreaks in Europe | Inland

The Belgian food agency FASFC calls on the consumer to stop consuming 5 chocolate products of the Ferrero brand. The products are linked to a Salmonella outbreak in several European countries. That was confirmed to our editors. In Britain, more than 60 people have been infected after eating Surprise eggs produced at the Ferrero factory in Arlon. There are currently no confirmed cases linked to this outbreak in Belgium, the FASFC says.

These products are popular with young children, notes the Federal Food Agency. “With Easter approaching, the FASFC requests that parents and educators check whether they have these products in their possession and, if so, ensure that they are not consumed,” it says in a press release.

It concerns the following products that were produced in the Ferrero factory in Arlon:

Kinder Surprise 20g and 3x20g with an expiry date (THT) between 11/07/22 and 7/10/22
Kinder Surprise Maxi with an expiry date (THT) between 10/08/22 and 10/09/22
Schoko-Bons with an expiry date (THT) between 10/08/22 and 10/09/22
Kids Mini Eggs with an expiry date (THT) between 10/08/22 and 10/09/22

Consumers in possession of these products are urged not to consume the products.

The popular chocolate eggs with a toy inside were recalled earlier today from, among other things, British store shelves. There, at least 63 cases of salmonella have already been linked to the chocolate confectionery, the majority of cases involving children under the age of 5, the British health service reports.

Since the FASFC was informed of this file, the Agency has been carrying out “additional and targeted checks” at Ferrero in Arlon. There are currently no confirmed cases linked to this outbreak in Belgium. “In collaboration with the Communities and the National Reference Laboratory Sciensano, an investigation is underway into a number of suspected cases,” it said.

What is Salmonella and what are the symptoms

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause the infection Salmonellosis. There are different types of Salmonella. The serotypes Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) and Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) are responsible for the majority of infections in humans in recent years. Salmonellosis is a common infection that in most cases heals without treatment. In some cases, Salmonellosis can become more serious. In case of severe symptoms, a doctor should be consulted who can initiate treatment.

The possible symptoms of infection by Salmonellosis are fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea and this within 6 to 72 hours after consumption of the contaminated food. Young children, pregnant women, people with reduced resistance and the elderly are at greater risk of developing symptoms.

Consumers who have questions about Salmonella can contact the Consumer Reporting Center of the FASFC via the online form or on the free number 0800 13 550.
