The fatal accident that took place last night on the N381 in Emmen happened during a chase by the police. A 43-year-old man from Coevorden was killed in the accident.
An officer was driving on the N34 near Erm when he wanted to check a car for unusual driving behaviour. The officer gave several stop signs, but the car with the Coevordenaar drove on, the police report. At the Westeind in Emmen, the agent parked his service car in front of the car he wanted to check.
He turned and drove away. Then a short chase ensued. On the N381, the man from Coevorden collided head on with another car. He died on the spot. In the other car was a 61-year-old woman from Emmen. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
According to a police spokesperson, the National Criminal Investigation Department is investigating the incident. That happens because the collision took place after a chase involving a police officer.
