Palleyways, red carpet, street style. The symbolic places of fashion, in all its forms, are evolving and expanding, so much so that today the fashion has arrived at museum. In fact, there are more and more retrospectives dedicated to the great creatives who have revolutionized the industry as we know it today, from Valentino Garavani to Thierry Mugler. But not only. The exhibitions that focus on the influence of fashion in every area of life are also multiplying, analyzing the mental and psychological process that lies behind the creation, or choice, of a dress. A demonstration of how much fashion really is an art form.
Haute Couture on display
Forever Valentinethe largest retrospective ever organized by the Italian fashion house, brings a bit of the Eternal City – and of the celebrated know-how of the fashion house- a Doha, Qatar. The exhibition, which can be visited until 1 April 2023 inside the M7, a hub of design and innovation, brings together over 200 archive looksbetween High Fashion andready to wear. Thus a dialogue opens between the work and the aesthetic vision of the founder Valentino Garavani and that of the current creative director, Pierpaolo Picciolibetween iconic shades of red and the equally recognizable Pink PP. Thierry Mugler: Couturissime instead, it is the first exhibition to celebrate the genius of Thierry Mugler (until 7 May 2023 at Brooklyn Museum from New York). Visionary, avant-garde, against the tide: the French designer is the author of some of the most original and innovative creations of recent years. From the use of unusual materials, such as glass, vinyl and latex, to the creation of non-traditional silhouettes, Mugler’s influence on the fashion world continues today.
Versace, Abloh, Dior. Fashion at the museum
References to the Baroque, reflections on sensuality, the relationship with celebrities. All this is Gianni Versace: Retrospective, the exhibition dedicated to the Italian designer, open until 7 May at the Groninger Museum in Groningen, the Netherlands. The retrospective traces Versace’s career from 1989 to 1997 through fashion shows, sketches, advertising campaigns, archive images and unpublished photographs. With the monograph Figures of Speech it is once again the Brooklyn Museum to tell the eclectic journey of another designer, who recently passed away: Virgil Abloh. From collaborations with contemporary artists and architects, to creations for Off-White and Louis Vuitton, passing through musical influences and the importance of Black culture. A journey through the mind of a creative who changed the fashion industry forever (until January 29th).
With the recent renovation of the Avenue Montaigne flagship store in Paris, Dior has decided to set up a permanent exhibition that tells the story of the maison. The Dior Gallery in fact, it traces the past of the fashion house through sketches, drawings and archive items, some of which have never been seen before. The flagship of this unprecedented museum are the over 1,800 dresses of the maison arranged in a fascinating rainbow of colours.
Fashion and psyche
Behind the creation of a dress are hidden intentions, values and references that are not always easy to grasp. Mirror Mirror – Fashion & the Psyche is the result of the collaboration between the Mode Museum in Antwerp and the Museum Dr. Guislain in Ghent. The retrospective, open until 26 February 2023 in Belgium, investigates the relationship between fashion, psychology and identity through works by Prada, Balenciaga, Comme des Garçons and many others. With Designing Women: Fashion Creators and Their Interiorsthe FIT Museum in New York instead analyzes the relationship between stylists and interior design, focusing on the way in which the studios, offices and homes of designers influence their work.
