Farmers experiment with marigolds to fight nematodes

Now there are marigolds on that field as a natural control of the nematodes. “I can already see with interim samples that 70 percent of the nematodes have disappeared. If this trial goes very well, I will soon have to use no or much less chemical crop protection agents.” That’s experiment two.

“And the African marigolds will soon be processed in the country, making it a great green manure.” That is a more tried and tested method, but for the sake of convenience we say: this is experiment three. “And then I can grow potatoes or onions on it again,” concludes Beuling.

The experiments must be in line with the action plans for agriculture in the Veenkoloniën, Westerwolde and Oldambt. Because these areas differ in agriculture, landscape and biodiversity, a target for 2030 has been determined for each area under the direction of the Agenda for the Peat Colonies. It is the search for agricultural forms that are profitable, contribute to the biodiversity and fertility of the soil and ensure a liveable countryside.

The Farmer Experiments subsidy scheme was already running but will be extended until 1 April 2024 due to success.
