Farmers depart from Groningen Airport Eelde

The dozens of farmers who have been campaigning at Groningen Airport Eelde since this morning to protest against the nitrogen plans have left. Their tractors were parked for hours in front of the airport’s main entrance.

The promotion ended around 3.15 pm. It is not clear whether the farmers have gone elsewhere to continue their demonstrations. The protest went “very friendly” during the day, an airport spokeswoman said earlier.

Mayor Marcel Thijsen of the municipality of Tynaarlo agreed with the farmers that runways should not be blocked. The trauma helicopter and the organ transport to and from the UMCG in Groningen also had to be able to leave without hindrance. He allowed the activists to stay until midnight ‘if necessary’, as long as they kept to the agreements.
