Farmers block highways with tractors in several places in the country | NOW

Several highways will be blocked on Monday by farmers with tractors. The farmers are blocking the A2, the A30 and the A67, among others, while tractors are also driving on the A28.

Follow the developments surrounding the spontaneous protests of the farmers in our live blog.

On the A2, the farmers with their tractors are on the road to Den Bosch, near Best. The highway is closed. The same applies to the A67 between Eindhoven and Venlo. Farmers close to Liessel block the road there. Hay bales are thrown on the road, among other things.

Liessel is located in the middle of the Peel, one of the nature reserves where significant intervention is required in accordance with the cabinet’s nitrogen plans. Nitrogen emissions in the Peel must be reduced by 70 to 80 percent.

The A30 is blocked by farmers at the exit to Lunteren. Farmers also occupy an exit on the N35 near Ommen.

Dozens of tractors drive towards Assen on the A28. A number of tractor drivers evaded the police by driving further along the roadside.

Farmers also gather at Winterswijk (Gelderland) and Schaijk (North Brabant). It is not yet known exactly what they will do and where they are headed.

Police on site, not yet clear what the consequences are

The police are on site on the A2 and A67, a spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat confirms. Earlier, Rijkswaterstaat said it would immediately call the police if tractors were to drive on the highways.

Initially, the farmers are asked to leave, according to a police spokesman. In extreme cases, the tractors will be towed away.

Rijkswaterstaat expects “small tufts of farmers to hit the road” in various places. On Wednesday it was still a large group and it was a matter of massive nuisance, according to a spokesperson. “You better see that coming.”

Farmers already announced new actions

Last Wednesday, many thousands of farmers already demonstrated in Stroe, Gelderland, against the cabinet’s nitrogen plans. On Friday there were smaller actions in various places.

Chairman Mark van den Oever of the action group Farmers Defense Force (FDF) already announced “wild actions”, which would start on Monday from 12 noon. According to Van den Oever, the demonstration in Stroe “didn’t help at all” and the supporters are “calling to throw in the punch”.

The actions are not centrally organized or coordinated by action groups such as FDF or Agractie. The groups are therefore aware of the actions.
