This weekend, Haarlem residents said goodbye to a special place on the fringes of the city. The hodgepodge of sea containers, a second-hand greenhouse and an old shed at the Veerplas is being demolished. The temporary pavilion Veerkwartier will then be converted into a permanent restaurant by catering entrepreneurs Merel Janssen and her husband Frank van Baaren.
It was precisely that vintage appearance that attracted many Haarlem residents to this place at the foot of the telecom tower on the edge of the Waardepolder business park. The big challenge for Merel Janssen was to build the temporary accommodation as much as possible with second-hand items.
The farewell party is also the start of a new phase: after two years, all permits have finally been obtained. Because the pavilion is located in a nature reserve, that turned out to be the biggest challenge.

The new pavilion will be located a little closer to the Veerplas. With a green roof, the wooden building must blend in with nature.
Not only is the pavilion being rebuilt. The entire Veerplas is getting a facelift. There is already a separate island where there will be an open-air theater, where huts can be built and where sandwiches can be baked.
