Farewell in front of a home crowd: Fred ends his career by winning Fluminense

Former Brazil international Fred retired at the age of 38. The striker made his final appearance on Saturday (local time) for Fluminense, who beat Ceará SC 2-1 in front of their home crowd on matchday 16 of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and finished second in the table. Fred came on in the 78th minute for his 271st Fluminense game.

The attacker was with the Rio de Janeiro club between 2009 and 2016 before returning in 2020. He has 130 goals and 37 assists. In the current season, Fred was used in 20 games across all competitions, mainly as a joker, in which he contributed two goals and two assists. “It will never be goodbye, idol,” the club said on social media. In his first move to Fluminense, Fred came from Olympique Lyon, which was his only stop in Europe. With the French, with whom he was under contract between 2005 and 2009, he reached his career high of 15 million euros in 2006.
