fans vs. air conditioners: which is better?

With the summer, interest and inquiries about the best way to combat the heat at home grow, and the question of which is better is imposed: if the ventilator or the air conditioner. Those who doubt think about electricity consumption, the price of products, or how to distribute them in space. Although the use of air conditioners is widely installed due to its rapid action on the ambient temperature, many opt for the classic fan, since it also has its advantages.

Although it is true that air conditioning achieves an enveloping effect in environments when it comes to cooling, it is also true that fans are among 6 and 7 times cheaper than air. It is also true that there are portable air conditioning units, but in most cases it is decided to install a unit, and the price of its installation considerably increases the initial value of investing in an air conditioner. Of course there are ceiling fans, which do require installation, although it is usually cheaper and many times the lighting in the rooms is used to install them.

Beyond the installation, the other factor that is taken into account is the expense on the energy bill. The electrical consumption of fans is usually much lower than that of air conditioners, reaching 25 times lower.

There is also the health factor. Air conditioners are usually very efficient when it comes to lowering the temperature of a room with their refrigeration, but their excessive use can trigger colds due to the shock of temperatures when going outside, as well as dermatitis, eye and throat irritation, due to the environmental dryness they generate. The classic fans, on the other hand, by removing the air help to improve its quality, in addition to being able to lower the ambient temperature between 5 and 6 degreesalthough on very hot days you have to be more patient to achieve the desired effect of lowering the overall temperature.

Both one and the other require some maintenance. While the fan requires someone to clean its blades periodically, the air conditioner requires its filter to be changed at least once a year.

In environmental terms, home fans consume an average of between 40 and 120 watts/hour electric power and industrial between 120 and 280 watts/hour, depending on the model. On the other hand, the air conditioners consume approx. between 2,000 and 5,000 watts/hour.

This difference in consumption not only impacts the electricity bill, but also a lower production of polluting gases such as CO2, which influence climate change and global warming, mainly noticeable in the accumulation of high temperatures in large cities. Once the exceptions have been made, it will be necessary to decide how and with what to cool off.
