Spectators threw several grenades from the stands onto the field. A video shows how one of the hand bombs detonated in the penalty area of the Estadio Gigante de Arroyito.
According to the Newell’s Old Boys’ English-language Twitter account, the use of the edged weapons of war did not upset anyone. The players of both teams warmed up despite the explosions on the field, but the game had to be kicked off later than planned because the lawn had to be re-prepared.
In the 90 minutes that followed, things were less explosive in terms of sport. Newell’s Old Boys, home club of six-time world footballer Lionel Messi and former club of the late Argentine football legend Diego Maradona, narrowly won the derby 1-0.
