Fans honor Maradona with messages sent into space via satellite | Football

“We love you and will remember you forever, now and in the future. Take care Diego,” fan Enrique Trincado told AFP after having his message recorded at Moron Air Base, about 25 miles west of Buenos Aires.

Uruguayan journalist Victor Hugo Morales is the godfather of the project. Morales covered the quarter-final between England and Argentina at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico when Maradona scored for the second time against the British. Partly due to his achievements, the South American country won the World Cup, making Maradona even more famous.

Cosmic Kite

The name ‘Cosmic Kite’ refers to the nickname the Uruguayan journalist gave to Maradona. “What planet are you from?”, the journalist shouted into his microphone when the former Argentina captain, who died suddenly in 2020 of a heart attack, dribbled past half the British team and managed to score the “goal of the century” .

The videos and audio clips are put into orbit via a hard drive onboard the satellite, along with a pair of the former star’s football boots. The entire project is an initiative of a currently unknown company.

Aeroplane

All messages will be collected in the coming months. Only then is a date set for the satellite’s launch. According to Maximiliano Fernando Gallo, one of the initiators, fans from all over the world send in countless messages.

An aircraft in honor of Maradona was also previously proposed. On the basis of photos and memorabilia, the private aircraft forms a traveling exhibition that will also stop at the World Cup in Qatar later this year. The plane is also a project of Maximiliano Fernando Gallo. At the presentation on the runway in Moron on May 26, he named the aircraft and all side projects in honor of the Argentine footballer ‘Tango D10S’.
