Depeche Mode posted a picture on their Instagram account of them signing a copy of their new album Memento Mori. The photo shows the cover adorned with angel wings, below which are the signatures of Dave Gahan and Martin Gore. A hand with a skull ring on a finger holding a pen was identified by fans as Gahan’s. The “Signed Artwork Print” was also available for purchase in the shop a little later, in a bundle with CD, tape and LP – and sold out immediately.
In the excitement about the new album, the hand already brings some people into lustful flushes. One user wrote: “That hand and that ring ??”. Others were freaking out over the upcoming single and album release – “SCREAMING THROWING UP PUNCHING THE WALLS” reads below the post (we hope that person is ok). Others expressed their anticipation less extreme and looked forward to the forthcoming concerts of the announced tour. One person wrote: “I’m so excited to hear this album! ❤️”, someone else: “See you in Paris”.
Many fans immediately requested the autographed edition and asked if it was for them – understandably, it would make a great keepsake for the record collection. The picture gave some hope that copies of the record with signatures or autograph cards will be available for purchase.
But there are also fans who are angry with Depeche Mode in the comments. “I lost interest after such a lame move last week,” wrote one. The user is referring to the countdown that was supposed to announce the release of the single “Ghosts Again” – but only led to another countdown. The single is now due out on Thursday February 9th. Here is the first teaser for the song. One person still doesn’t believe in it though, commenting, “Can’t wait for another countdown on friday.” Another user shared the words, “I’m still mad at you but I still love you guys ?❤️”
However, that’s not the only criticism in the comments column. Users complained about the ticket prices for the “Memento Mori” tour. One person wrote, “I’m heart broken that i can’t go to the one show in LA, tickets aren’t affordable.” The person also expressed concern that this will be the synth duo’s final tour.
Since the death of founding member Andrew Fletcher, Depeche Mode has only existed as a duo. “Memento Mori” is the first release in this constellation. Some fans fear that the band will no longer work like this. Someone commented under the post, “Depeche Mode is over, to tell you the truth. Now, it’s some kind of duet, Gahan and Gore. This isn’t Depeche Mode…”
