The “Blue and White Stadium” fan initiative sees the debate about a location for a new Hertha BSC stadium as an opportunity for early progress.
“The political constellation has never been so favorable,” said Knut Beyer, who had the idea for the initiative and is a city planner by profession, to the “Tagesspiegel” (Sunday).
According to the report, “Blau-Weißes Stadion” had brought the club and the Senate together for talks several times. However, Beyer also sees time pressure: “It has to happen this year,” he said. “If we don’t have a location this year, I personally see black.”
There has been disagreement between Hertha and the city about the location of the new stadium for years. The three locations that are currently still up for debate – on the Maifeld, the Olympic site and in the area of the former Tegel Airport – all have different problems.
The Bundesliga club actually wants to open the new stadium in 2025. Hertha prefers building on the Olympic site on Rominter Allee, the old Senate has repeatedly spoken out in favor of Tegel.

But now there are some new political decision-makers. According to the report, Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) promised at least a quick clarification of the location issue in the sports committee. Julian Schwarze, spokesman for urban development for the Greens parliamentary group in the House of Representatives, told the newspaper: “We want a solution to the location issue that makes sense for the city and the club in terms of urban development policy, sporting and ecological aspects.”
The area around the Olympic Stadium is particularly suitable because of the existing connection to public transport.
