Family of black American killed by police receives three million dollars | Abroad

The municipality of Elizabeth City, in the American state of North Carolina, is paying three million dollars (about 2.8 million euros) to the relatives of a black man who was shot dead by the police. Andrew Brown Jr. died in April 2021 in his car by police bullets when he wanted to flee from some agents.

Footage from when the man was shot in April 2021:

The sheriff of the town said in a statement that a payment arrangement has been agreed with the family. The next of kin had demanded $30 million. The money goes to Brown’s children.

Brown, 42, fled when officers tried to search his home early in the morning. Police were looking for him for selling cocaine. Brown was driving his car toward officers when he was fired upon from multiple sides. According to the family, he was executed and died from a bullet in the back of the head.

His death came a day after the conviction of Derek Chauvin, the ex-cop who killed black man George Floyd in Minneapolis. Brown’s death reignited debate in the United States about police violence against black people. In the small town of Elizabeth City, about half of the population is black.

The officers are not being prosecuted because they thought Brown wanted to attack them.
