The 222-year-old monumental old beech tree of Haarlem, which could not withstand a storm a year and a half ago, will be delivered this week in planks from the sawmill Het Jonge Schaap. The blades of the windmill on the Zaanse Schans can spin a lot with this autumn wind.
Miller Tim Doeves and the sixty volunteers of Het Jonge Schaap try to saw as many planks as possible from the supplied tree trunks. “That is still difficult because the parts have already been delivered here in quarters.”
But he knows that many Haarlem residents have already placed an order with wood processor Haarlems Hout for a bread cutting board, as a reminder of the precious beech from the De Bolwerken park. “This wood should be treated with love, right?”
By the way, the bread cutting boards will have to wait a while. Haarlems Hout previously announced that the planks will first have to dry for another two years. A few hundred cutting boards have already been ordered.
