Fallen Canadian soldiers from WWI commemorated

On July 8, 2023, it will be 100 years since the Guynemer monument in Poelkapelle and ‘The Brooding Soldier’ ​​in Sint-Juliaan were inaugurated. To commemorate this 100th anniversary, a memorial weekend will be held on 8 and 9 July under the name ‘100 years of Le Capitaine & The Soldier’.

Le Captain‘ refers to Georges Guynemer, one of the most famous air heroes of the First World War and The Soldier then refers to ‘The Brooding Soldier‘, the memorial dedicated to the more than 2000 Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in the first gas attack during the Second Battle of Ypres.

A solemn commemoration of the Brooding Soldier place. This forms the opening of the memorial weekend. This was done in collaboration with the VAC (Veterans Affairs Canada). Vice President Vincent van Quickenborne was also present, as well as high-ranking army officers from Belgium and Canada. The commemoration was held in a traditional, but youthful manner.
