Fake vaccination card? Serious allegations against tennis star

Italy’s tennis star Camila Giorgi is suspected of having presented fake Covid 19 vaccination certificates. Now the police are investigating against the 30-year-old.

Shortly before Christmas Eve, the first speculations arose, now the Italian police are investigating tennis star Camila Giorgi. The 30-year-old, who is currently 66th in the WTA world rankings, is said to have obtained a fake Covid 19 vaccination certificate last year and also presented it.

With the fake “Green Pass”, the Italian is said to have secured participation in international tennis tournaments, among other things. This would also include Giorgi’s triumph at the WTA tournament in Montreal in August 2021, which was her third and so far last title on the WTA tour and is considered the greatest success of her career.

At the beginning of April 2021, Giorgi tested positive for the Covid 19 virus. She then had to isolate herself in Charleston, where she would have actually played a WTA tournament. Giorgi also had to cancel her participation in the Billie Jean King Cup 2021 due to the corona.

Italian tennis star is said to have identified himself as fully vaccinated

However, Giorgi’s recovery status is not up for debate. According to media reports, the 30-year-old is said to have been fully vaccinated. Should the information on her vaccination status turn out to be falsified, Giorgi would have committed a criminal offense under Italian law.

The WTA could then also investigate Giorgi. After all, fully vaccinated players were subject to less strict corona restrictions for training and competitions.

Participation in tournaments was also linked to vaccination status worldwide. The case of Novak Djokovic, who was denied entry to Australia and thus also participation in the Australian Open as an unvaccinated player, received particular attention in spring 2022.

The Italian Tennis Federation has not yet issued a statement on the Camila Giorgi case.
