Fake speed camera as a cry for help from the neighborhood: ‘A joke, but also very serious’

A prankster has hung a fake speed camera on the Strijpsestraat in Eindhoven. “It’s a joke, but it should be taken very seriously,” says local resident Bert. The street has a speed limit of thirty, but residents say that people are speeding through the street at hundreds. The municipality of Eindhoven couldn’t laugh at it and removed the fake flash.

Who installed the homemade flash box remains a mystery. The fact that he was mistaken for real is evident from reports in flash apps. Those apps warned about the gray painted wooden cabinet.

“They drive between thirty and one hundred kilometers per hour here.”

The fake speed camera hung in front of Kasper’s house. “I thought it was a good initiative. People drive very fast here and the speed camera really worked. You saw people looking at it and braking or holding down the gas.”

According to Kasper, some motorists fly through the street at a hundred kilometers per hour. “Especially when they see that the traffic light is still green, they accelerate a lot.” Local resident Bert confirms this. “They drive between thirty and one hundred kilometers per hour here.”

“It’s a joke, but it should be taken very seriously,” he continues. “Since the road here has been renovated, there has been a lot of driving. It is especially bad in the evening. You are knocked off your bike here almost every day.”

“I think it can just hang there.”

According to Bert, a fatal accident is just waiting to happen. “And then it’s too late, if only there had been a speed camera.” A woman who has just done some shopping thinks it is a shame that the municipality has removed the fake speed camera. “I think it can just hang there, if it makes them drive slower, I’m fine with it.”

Local residents are disappointed that the fake flash is no longer there. “I know that the municipality received complaints about the box,” says Kasper. By the way, it couldn’t have been a real speed camera. The Public Prosecution Service has a rule that a fixed speed camera does not belong in a 30 zone. And Kasper doesn’t understand that at all: “More and more inner cities are turning thirty. If they don’t enforce, such a measure is pointless.”
