Novak Djokovic is the number one placed at Wimbledon for a reason. Where Van Rijthoven normally scores a lot of points on his first serve, that was not the case on Sunday-evening. That was partly due to the Roosendaler himself, but mainly to the class of his Serbian opponent.

The last three editions of Wimbledon were won by Djokovic and in the first set he also showed that there was no question of underestimation. Van Rijthoven has ensured that he is an opponent to be reckoned with within a month. De Roosendaler lost the first set 6-2.

Fantastic second set
The second set of the match was a blast. The tennis players turned it into a fantastic game. Van Rijthoven showed that he could indeed compete with a world top player like Djokovic. He took the second set 6-4.

The whole of the Netherlands started dreaming of a mega stunt, but that dream soon shattered. Djokovic stepped up a gear and suddenly waltzed over the Brabander. It was a hopeless set, 6-1. What was particularly striking was the number of unnecessary mistakes at Van Rijthoven.

boyhood dream
Also in the fourth set it quickly became clear that a stunt against the Serb was out of the question. Van Rijthoven was already broken in the first game. He never got over that break. He lost 6-2. It is absolutely no shame that the Roosendaler is eliminated by Djokovic.

The fairytale of Tim van Rijthoven ends for now in the fourth round of Wimbledon, but what the Roosendaler has shown in one month is great. He himself called it a boyhood dream several times and that is not saying too much. A month ago, he hadn’t won even once on an ATP Tour, while a month later he’s playing against the best tennis player of the moment.

The next Grand Slam is the US Open. This tournament starts on August 22 and is played on hard courts. For this there are several ‘smaller’ tournaments where Van Rijthoven will undoubtedly also appear.
