Brouwer made himself heard on the gravel in his hometown of Houston. He worked his way through the preliminaries and played a tennis tournament at the highest level for the first time in his career.
In the first round of the main tournament, Brouwer was much too strong for the higher placed Feliciano López in two sets: 6-4, 6-2. He then made short work of Jeffrey John Wolfs in the eighth finals: 6-1, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, Brouwer lost to Opelka, the number 18 in the world.
