The fair in Volendam will be celebrated this fall around the dike and on the Slobbeland recreation area. The organizers of the two fairgrounds in the village have joined forces. A discussion had arisen because there were two carnival tents last year. And that was against the sore leg of the fairground operators and some Volendammers.
“What was previously considered impossible is becoming reality,” the two parties write on social media. The fair, which is always celebrated on the first weekend of September, caused quite a stir last year. It was against the sore leg of the fairground operators because the fairground tent was too far away from the fairground attractions. In addition, the fairground tent that was already there on the Slobbeland was less busy and there was also ‘no fairground feeling’ on the dike.
Petition
A petition was started by a number of Volendammers, including former State Secretary Mona Keijzer. The petition was signed en masse and an investigation followed by an independent agency commissioned by the municipality of Edam-Volendam. Many conversations were also held. “Not always without emotion, because when you come to the fair it becomes personal. We have all received that in recent months,” said the organizations.

And now after months of ‘talking about’ as they say in Volendam, there is finally the redeeming answer: “By not looking back, but forward, both parties have full confidence in the cooperation. Of course there are still a number of hurdles to be taken, but on the whole they agree. We will bring together the best features with the sole purpose of guaranteeing the fairground feeling. Oh yes, and we can be clear about that right away: Kermis Festival Slobbeland.”
Kermis Volendam will take place this year from Friday 8 to Monday 11 September.
