Faeser – More speed with deportations

Berlin (Reuters) – Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) is calling for faster deportation of rejected asylum seekers.

A corresponding package of measures is expected to be decided by the cabinet this week. “I will bring our comprehensive legislative package for more and faster returns to the cabinet on Wednesday. Anyone who does not have the right to remain in Germany will have to leave our country again,” said Faeser to the newspaper “Rheinischen Post” (Monday edition), according to the preliminary report. This also includes expelling and deporting criminals and dangerous offenders more consistently and quickly. “It is clear that we will continue to negotiate agreements with the countries of origin very intensively so that they actually take their nationals back.” The measures are necessary so that people who have found protection from war and terror in Germany can continue to receive good care. 1.1 million war refugees from Ukraine alone were offered protection.

The number of returns this year is already 27 percent higher than in the same period last year, Faeser told the newspaper. “Nevertheless, we must provide regulations with which we can enforce our law more consistently and quickly.” Among other things, the paper envisages expanding the powers of authorities and the police in enforcing returns. Many detailed changes are aimed at strengthening the so-called participation rights of asylum seekers in the asylum procedure. In addition, the maximum duration of detention on departure should be extended.
