If you are going to fly, it may happen that, for example, you are required to wear a face mask at the airport in the country of departure and on the plane. But that you do not have to wear a mask at the destination airport and during the return flight. What’s up with that?

International guidelines

There are international guidelines for wearing face masks at airports and on airplanes. These are drawn up by the European Aviation Authority (EASA). But each country decides for itself how they deal with those guidelines and which corona rules apply in that country. As a result, the rules at airports and on airplanes are not the same everywhere. In the Netherlands, the cabinet has decided to follow the international guidelines for corona rules in aviation.

Dutch rules from May 21

This week, the European Aviation Authority (EASA) announced that the international guidelines are being amended. That is why the rules in the Netherlands are also changing. From Saturday 21 May, wearing a face mask will no longer be mandatory at Dutch airports. People with vulnerable health are advised to (voluntarily) wear a medical mask.

Preventing contamination and spread

The current virus variant is less sickening, but many people still get infected with the corona virus. Wearing a face mask can help to prevent you from becoming infected and the virus from spreading. The same applies to the basic advice, such as washing your hands regularly and coughing and sneezing into your elbow.
People who are concerned about their health prefer to use a medical mask of type IIR or an FFP2 mask. And the following applies to everyone: do a self-test if you have complaints and do not go to the airport if the result is positive.
