The Mercedes of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are the fastest in the first free practice session of the US GP in Miami. Russell preceded Hamilton by two tenths in 1’30″125, despite a first part of the session in which he had to stay in the pits because the mechanics had to change the steering rack. However, towards the end of the session, Russell took advantage of the soft tires and the evolution of the new asphalt to get ahead of everyone.Third time for Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari in the Ferrari, 3/10 behind and fourth for the world champion Max Verstappen in the Red Bull.

Fifth is Carlos Sainz with the second red, while sixth is Pierre Gasly with the Alpine ahead of the two Aston Martins of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. It’s not Nico Hulkenberg, who set a good time before losing his Haas in turn 3 and crashing: session ended almost immediately for him and momentary red flag. Sergio Perez’s second Red Bull, currently only 11th, is in a bit of difficulty in this first session. At 11.30 pm the second free practice session.
