F1 Australia Charles Leclerc retired immediately with Ferrari what happened

The Ferrari driver’s Australian GP lasts a few meters and ends up in the gravel: a spin triggered by an opponent, the reconstruction

For Charles Leclerc, polar star of Ferrari, the 2023 F1 World Championship has started decidedly badly. Retirement in Bahrain, seventh place in Saudi Arabia and – the icing on the cake – the Australian GP which lasted a few hundred metres. For the Monegasque, a spin at turn 3 and SF-23 stuck in the gravel. Here’s what happened.

leclerc out

Leclerc had a good starting point, who from seventh had almost flanked Fernando Alonso when braking into the first corner, with many single-seaters in a few meters. Leclerc was on the outside but would have had free space to already be fourth or fifth if the unpredictable hadn’t happened: the Monegasque tries to overtake on the outside, Lance Stroll, in the other Aston Martin, arrives slightly wide and defends himself. he brakes hard but slightly loses control of his car. With the front, the Canadian then touches Leclerc’s Ferrari. Charles’ GP pretty much ends at that moment.

leclerc radio

“They touched me on the rear” the unfortunate Ferrari driver would later hear croaking on the radio. The redhead number 16, shaken on the rear, lost grip and ended up spinning in the central phase of turn 3: car in the escape route while the big group marched by, Leclerc tries to resume the race but it’s too late, the omelette is done. Ferrari blocked, Charles’ race over. “Race contact, no investigation necessary”, will arrive shortly after the communication from the Race Direction. Now Charles’ mission is to recover from the jolt: the one suffered by Stroll was mild, the one to morale much stronger.
