The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate and the Union of Water Boards join the Heritage Deal. This brings the number of participants to 15. The aim of the Heritage Deal is to use heritage for, for example, making the living environment more sustainable and dealing with climate change. Including by encouraging cooperation between governments, social organizations and owners. Every year, money is awarded to projects at the intersection of area development, heritage and sustainability. Water boards, municipalities and provinces submit these projects.

A successfully completed project from the Heritage Deal is the Stadshaven Maassluis, into which a total of 3.5 million euros has been invested by the Heritage Deal, province and municipality. Minister Jetten (Climate and Energy) and State Secretary Uslu (Culture and Media) visited the project.

Minister Jetten: ‘We of course have beautiful cultural heritage here, such as inland vessels that tell the beautiful history of the Netherlands as a sailing country. If we want to preserve it, we must ensure that this type of cultural heritage can also become sustainable. That is why EZK is now working together with OCW in the Heritage Deal.’

State Secretary Uslu: ‘Industrial, nautical and historical heritage come together in the port of Maassluis. Here, quality of life and preservation of heritage go hand in hand, and full use has been made of new techniques in the field of sustainability. A wonderful example of what the Heritage Deal can do. That is why I am so pleased that the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy and the Union of Water Boards are now participating.’

The Heritage Deal is a partnership between the ministries of OCW, BZK, IenW and LNV, the Interprovincial Consultation (IPO), the Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG), the Federation of Large Monument Municipalities, the Federation for the Conservation of Monuments, Natuurmonumenten, Staatsbosbeheer, LandschappenNL, the National Real Estate Agency and the Federation of Spatial Quality. As of today, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy and the Union of Water Boards have also joined.
