Eyebrows, alternatives to tattoos: henna

Let’s start with the temporary solution: henna. It is a dyeing powder obtained from the dried and ground leaves of Lawsonia inermis, with a typical red color called henna or henna, used since ancient times to color hair and eyebrows.

«The term henna is also used to indicate powders that allow the creation of neutral and black shades obtained, respectively, from Senna plants Italic And Indigofera tinctoria. Furthermore, there is a range of on the market colors mixed in the laboratory with other plants and which give brown and blonde shades”, explains Giada Longo, International Master Permanent Makeup Microblanding Dermo Academy School.

«Henna pigments they bind to the cuticlethe outermost protective section of the hair and hairs, dyeing it and also giving body and depth.”

Pro. It intensifies the natural color, gives fullness, masks the unevenness of the surface of the eyebrows (holes without hair, sparse hairs) because it has the characteristic of also dyeing the skin. «It is suitable for special events and also to see how it looks with more defined arches before moving on to the tattoo».

Against. It has a very short duration: the result lasts for approximately 2 weeks. «The color fades easily if you are in the habit of using detergents that clean deeply. It is not suitable for all skin types, because in the case of oily skin the color tends to dissolve due to hyper-sebaceousness. For the same reason, exfoliants in granules and with enzymes should be avoided.”

The eyebrow tint

The technique replicates that of permanent hair coloring: it uses specific preparations that trigger chemical reactions which, due to oxidation, remove the natural pigments of the hairs, replacing them with a new color.

«Eyebrow tints represent an excellent solution for intensifying natural reflections, modifying them and covering white hairs», underlines Giulio Schettini, National Brow & Beauty Authority of Benefit Cosmetics. «I recommend always carrying out a patch test to check for any allergiesand to avoid using traditional hair coloring because it is too aggressive for the delicate skin of this area of the face very close to the eyes.”

Pro. «It gives immediate fullness to the eyebrow arch because it manages to color even the invisible hairs that surround the perimeter of the eyebrows». Lasts about a month.

Against. «It does not fill the empty spaces on the surface of the eyebrows. Taking numerous showers reduces the permanence of the color and exfoliation makes it fade.”

Lamination

It smoothes the eyebrows with a mechanism of action similar to that of a perm: it modifies the structure of the shaft, and instead of curling them it makes them smoother. «It is a process during which the expert softens ermakes the hairs flexible by applying a chemical solution”.

«Then, using precision separating tools and small brushes, he reshapes them, defines the direction of growth and fixes them», explains Giulio Schettini. «It’s not just a method that lifts the hairs upwards, but it’s a procedure also created to give texture to very thin hairswhich gives texture.”

Pro. With the right care it lasts up to two months. «It intensifies natural shades, gives shine, thickness and nourishment to eyebrows thanks to the presence of nourishing active ingredients in the formulations. Artfully positioned, the hairs mask any holes on the eyebrow surface.”

Against. It should only be done by expert operators capable of evaluating the right direction to give to the growth of the hairs. «It requires constant and careful care which involves the daily application of nourishing products. Without adequate maintenance, eyebrows become dry, unruly and worn-looking.”
