Extremely high water in Goois Nature Reserve: “Between ten and twenty meters above NAP”

Never before has it been so wet in the Goois Nature Reserve in Hilversum. Due to heavy rainfall in recent days, a large part of the nature reserve has been flooded. “Normally there is about one and a half meters less water here,” explains John Didderen, ranger of the Goois Nature Reserve.

Some hikers who visited the nature reserve today express their concerns about the flooding. “It’s becoming very clear that things are not going well with the environment and the water level, so that means something to me,” says one of the hikers. “This could of course happen much more often,” says another.

“So I wonder what the consequences of that are. We are still quite high up here, but if it floods even here, it worries me. The bridges are literally under water.”

Yet Didderen says there is no need to worry, the high water level has only positive consequences for this nature reserve. “The drinking water supply is back in stock, and we will soon see fantastic nature. Beautiful plants, flowers and amphibians and mammals will be attracted to it. We prefer wet places than dry heathland,” says Didderen.
