Many winegrowers now grow grapes that were previously unimaginable here, says Robin Hulst of De Apolstelhoeve in Maastricht. “The climate used to be not good enough to make a good wine from a Gewürztraminer grape. The temperature has gone up,” he explains. “We have more experience and knowledge and the mechanization that you can use in the vineyard is better than it was then. More and more colleagues are planting varieties that come from areas such as Burgundy.”
