If you’ve been outside on Sunday, one thing’s for sure: you got wet. It was therefore the wettest June 5 ever measured in our province. A record amount of rain was measured at two of the three measuring stations in Brabant.
“In Eindhoven 48.1 millimeters of rain fell. This is more than double the old record. The record has also been broken at the weather station in Volkel. 30.5 millimeters fell there now,” says weatherman Raymond Klaassen of Weerplaza.
More than double the old record and yet you may not have noticed much from the extreme rainfall. Because in the west of the province there was not much precipitation at all. “About ten to fifteen millimeters fell there. That is because the precipitation came over the country as a kind of band. You can see that a lot fell in that band, but much less outside it.”
“You need prolonged rain.”
Nature is delighted with the proverb ‘after great drought comes great rain’. It has been much too dry in recent weeks, so nature could use the rain of the last few days. Nevertheless, Klaassen says that we should not celebrate too early. “The risk is that so much falls that everything is quickly drained through the sewers or rivers. You need prolonged rain. But I do think that nature was very happy with the past few days.”
In the coming days, nature can quench its thirst for a while. “There will be some rain every now and then through Thursday, but not like the past few days. It will also remain cloudy.”
“The sun will shine again from Friday.”
Fortunately, Klaassen has good news for people without a rain suit: “The sun will shine again from Friday. Temperatures rise to about 22 to 24 degrees. That lasts all weekend.” An extra boost for this already short working week.
Several streets were empty, such as in Eindhoven, Valkenswaard and Veldhoven.
