With a bilateral extradition treaty, the Netherlands and Morocco are strengthening their joint approach to cross-border organized crime. Minister Yesilgöz-Zegerius of Justice and Security wrote to the House of Representatives today that an official agreement has been reached on an extradition treaty. The text of the treaty will be prepared for signature in the coming months. The treaty is expected to be signed in the autumn and submitted to the House of Representatives for approval.
Organized crime crosses all our borders. International drug crime is constantly shifting the smuggling routes and criminal assets are quickly moved to other countries to avoid being caught by the investigative services. Only by cooperating more with other countries can we roll up and destroy these internationally operating criminal networks,” said Minister Yesilgöz-Zegerius.
The bilateral treaty with Morocco broadens the number of offenses for which extradition is possible between the two countries and makes specific agreements about procedures, so that more and more efficient cooperation is possible. Even after entering into a bilateral treaty, each request for extradition is individually assessed and tested on the basis of legal and treaty frameworks.
