The Drents Overijsselse Delta, Vechtstromen and Rhine and IJssel water boards, together with Rijkswaterstaat, are installing extra pumps in the IJssel in order to be able to keep sufficient water in the water boards’ areas in the short term. This is necessary because of the extremely low water level in the IJssel.
With these extra pumps, water can be pumped into the Twente Canal, from there the water is further distributed.
For Drenthe, this affects the area up to Coevorden, reports the Vechtstromen water board. “The area above is supplied with water from the IJsselmeer and the low water level is not a problem there,” a spokesperson for Vechtstromen said. The same also applies to the Drenthe part of the Drents Overijsselse Delta water board (WDOD). “The water from the IJssel is mainly needed for the Overijssel part of our area,” says the WDOD spokesperson.
The water levels on the IJssel are extremely low. This is expected to continue in the coming weeks. As a result, the water levels on the IJssel are under pressure and additional measures are required. The water boards try to prevent a water shortage in this way, but cannot guarantee that this will be possible throughout the summer.
