Expertise centers Dementia launch brain health campaign
In Flanders, approximately 141,000 people have dementia. By 2070, that number will have doubled.
Lifestyle plays a role
“More attention to a lifestyle that is good for the brain and possibly reduces the risk of dementia, can therefore make a difference for many people,” emphasizes scientific assistant Jan Steyaert.
“A healthy diet, moderate alcohol consumption, exercise, and staying cognitively and socially active all lead to better brain health, as well as better cardiovascular health.”
The attention for the prevention of brain diseases has increased in recent years. “Old age remains the most important factor in the development of dementia, but more and more research shows that up to 40 percent of dementia is related to lifestyle,” explains Steyaert.
The centers are launching the “2 for the price of 1” campaign today/Monday. “We want to make everyone aware that tackling the most important lifestyle factors that determine the risk of dementia also benefits the heart and blood vessels,” says Steyaert.

Campaign
It is no coincidence that the campaign starts at the start of the Week of Care. This year’s theme is “prevention”. The website www.2voordeprijsvan1.be collects campaign material and facts about brain health.
All Flemish GPs also receive a poster with tips that they can discuss with their patients.
