Expedition Netherlands: The mystery of the Broken Circle/Spiral Hill artwork

In addition to Broken Circle/Spiral Hill, there are two more landscape artworks created by Robert Smithson. They are both in America. It starts in 1970 with the construction of Spiral Jetty. In 1971 he started working in Emmen and two years later he started Amarillo Ramp in the American state of Texas.

During the construction of this work of art, Smithson died in a plane crash. His widow, Nancy Holt, later completed the artwork. In the report you will see photos of the other works of art. There is also footage shot by Smithson himself when he built Broken Circle/Spiral Hill.

The current owners of the land on which the artwork is located wish to remain anonymous. But on their behalf we will speak to someone who will explain the plans for the site. Housing construction is therefore an option. And as far as they are concerned, the work of art must remain intact.

We will never know whether artist Robert Smitshon agrees. “When he created the artwork, it was intended to be temporary. So we don’t know what he thinks about it still being there,” Reenders explains. “What we do know is that it is still there.” And so it will remain there for the time being. And who knows, in a few years it will be accessible to everyone again.

Expeditie Nederland can be seen every Monday evening at 6:30 PM on NPO2. You can look back via this link.
