The fairy tale of tennis player Gijs Brouwer at the US Open is over. Tonight he lost in the second round in four sets to Lorenzo Musetti.
After successfully completing three qualifications, the world number 181 was allowed to make his debut at a Grand Slam tournament. A smashing debut because Monday Brouwer sent the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino home without having to give up even one set.
Brouwer started strong against Musetti, who was placed 26th in New York. He won the first set after a tiebreak, but then the difference between the Italian and the qualifier clear. With 3-6, 4-6 and 2-6, Brouwer had to acknowledge his superiority in Musetti.
