Black depth. A white line shines onto an equilateral triangle and is absorbed as a rainbow. The simple yet expressive cover design of Pink Floyd’s 1973 record “The Dark Side of the Moon” was designed by the British art house Hipgnosus and – like the album itself – is a legendary part of rock music history. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the work, the exhibition “HIPGNOSIS. BREATHE – 50 Years of The Dark Side of the Moon” in the Berlin Browse Gallery.
Together with curator John Colton, Hipgnosis founder Aubrey Powell selected pieces that tell the story of the band and the famous design. Black and white photos of Pink Floyd during their 1973 “The Dark Side of The Moon” tour, as well as other art prints of other album covers by the group, are presented in the interior of the room. Also on display are some photo designs that Powell created with his partner Storm Thorgerson for other 70s music greats such as Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel and Paul McCartney.
In order to explore the album’s existential questions, Berlin-based and internationally known photographers – including Nikos Pilos, Robert King and Lisa Bukreyeva – were asked to submit images that reference the themes and prove the topicality of the 50-year-old record.
