The train staff would have tried to control the intercom on Sunday evening, but without success. They could not stop the audio clip, nor make an announcement themselves. The incident lasted ten minutes in total.
According to the railway company OEBB, the announcements were made “by people directly on the train via intercoms”. Presumably, the suspects opened the intercom boxes with a key and then held their mobile phone to the microphone on which they played the fragments. There are several of those boxes with intercoms all over the train. As soon as one is active, the other intercoms are immediately blocked. This made it impossible for the conductors to intervene.
“We clearly distance ourselves from the content. We have filed a report with the police,” says OEBB. Several similar incidents have happened in recent days, the carrier reports.
