After 16 years
Former Werder professional Marcelo Moreno has ended his career in the Bolivian national team after 16 years. The 36-year-old leaves as his country’s record player and goalscorer. The long-time captain was replaced shortly before the end of his last game in Uruguay (0-3) on Tuesday evening (local time) to the applause of the fans and hugs from the players of both teams.
Moreno made his debut for La Verde in September 2007 and made 107 further appearances in which he scored 31 goals. “Today I am very happy to be a reference in the national team and to have represented the flag of my country well, because it is not easy to play for the national team and score so many goals,” said Moreno, who played in the qualifiers became the top goalscorer for the 2022 World Cup with ten goals.
The dream of going to a World Cup with Bolivia has “come to an end” for Moreno, at least as a player – but the dream lives on. “I don’t know what will happen next for me, as a player, as a coach, as a manager, as a president, I don’t know, but I’m sure I’ll go to the World Cup with my national team,” said Moreno, who is currently is under contract with Independiente del Valle in Ecuador.
