Would be 8th, German coach at Violets
Austria Wien fired coach Manfred Schmid on December 5th, and since then the seventh-placed player in the Austrian Bundesliga has been looking for a successor. According to the “Crown newspaper” and the “courier“It will be Michael Wimmer, who is to be presented at a press conference on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The 42-year-old left VfB Stuttgart almost a month ago after the Swabians decided in favor of Bruno Labbadia and against him as head coach.
Wimmer would be the eighth German coach in the club’s history; his predecessors included Horst Hrubesch, Joachim Löw and Thorsten Fink. The last German on the sidelines was Thomas Letsch from Bochum, who scored an average of 1.49 points in 37 games between February 2018 and March 2019 (see the history of the coach).
According to reports, numerous other German coaches or coaches known from the Bundesliga or 2nd division were also traded before Wimmer, including Manuel Baum, Heiko Herrlich, Robert Klauß, Florian Kohfeldt and Adi Hütter.
Ex-Stuttgarter Wimmer looked after VfB on an interim basis in seven games in which he won four. He had previously been an assistant since 2019 but didn’t want to step down to the second link. “I really enjoyed working for VfB, first as an assistant coach and in recent weeks as the manager responsible for the first team. Now is the time for me to take the next step and take on a new challenge. It was eventful and instructive years at VfB, after which I now feel ready to work permanently as head coach,” he said on his farewell.
