At the beginning of the winter break, ex-Freiburg professional Nils Petersen spoke about the current situation in the Bundesliga and assessed the previous performances of FC Bayern and BVB.
FC Bayern has “lost a bit of its self-image,” said Petersen, who once played for Munich, in an interview with “Sky”.
“With the cup quarter-finals that we won with Freiburg in Munich last April and the change of coach, it started that one or two opponents no longer traveled to Munich with paralyzing respect,” the former striker continued : “It was more of a feeling: Bayern can be beaten.”
This season, FC Bayern are no longer playing their opponents against the wall. Therefore, the German record champions have become “a little more vulnerable”. “They’re okay as a team, but one or two players like Joshua Kimmich are currently lacking the self-confidence to completely dominate the game,” said the 35-year-old.
Petersen raved highly about new signing Harry Kane. “I like him as a type of player. He’s a very pleasant appearance, an authentic personality,” the two-time national player praised the Englishman.
Kane’s “nose” in front of the penalty area is “amazing”. “He also takes the shots from the second row, never spares himself, works for the team, puts people next to him in the limelight. Because of his personality and mentality, he is so valued in the team that guys like Leroy Sané always try to use him,” Petersen analyzed further.
Kane also makes his teammates better. Since the striker has been part of the Bayern team, Sané, for example, has had much better body language. “Not least because of Harry Kane, because Leroy has fun and, above all, respect,” emphasized Petersen.
Inevitable unrest at BVB
The long-time Freiburger, who currently plays for the state league team Blankenburger FV, had rather critical words for BVB. Dortmund’s biggest problem is inconsistency.
“Then sometimes there is a Süle on the bench, sometimes a Reus. I know that myself, there is unrest when columns sit on the bench,” he emphasized.
The hoped-for development cannot be seen at BVB. “And then the question inevitably arises as to whether potential and squad quality really make BVB a serious title contender compared to Bayern or currently Leverkusen. As of now: no,” said Petersen.
