Committed Gressel, Schöpf & Co.
Axel Schuster has extended his contract as managing director and sporting director at MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps FC. As the club announced, the former Schalke sports director is now bound until 2026. Schuster has worked for the Canadians since 2019. Julian Gressel (28), Florian Jungwirth (33) and Alessandro Schöpf (28) were signed under his aegis (to all transfers).
“Since arriving in Vancouver three years ago, Axel Schuster has embraced our city and we are proud that we will continue to work together to extend our commitment to building our club, the community we serve and our nationwide football programs to fulfill from the first kick to the first team. Thanks to Axel’s leadership, we are on track to bring this year to a successful close and prepare for the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League, our 50th anniversary in 2024 and the 2026 Men’s World Cup in Vancouver,” said co-owner and CEO Jeff Mallett.
Schuster, who worked as sporting director for the Royal Blues from 2016 to 2019 and before that at FSV Mainz 05, added: “I am very honored and grateful to continue working with all the talented and passionate people we have in our have club. We’ve talked a lot about development since we came to Vancouver three years ago, and while the impact of the pandemic has complicated some areas, we’ve never stopped moving forward and raising the bar every year. Our mission is to build something great on and off the field and I am more than willing to continue to lead that process and push us all to strive for the highest goals in our competitions.”
