Ex-referee Urs Meier criticizes the final decision

In the women’s European Championship final, Germany should have gotten a penalty – agrees ex-top referee Urs Meier.

In the women’s European Championship final between Germany and England (1:2 aet), a scene in the first half caused a stir. It was 26 minutes into the game when England captain Leah Williamson stopped the ball with her hand in front of the line.

Ukrainian referee Kateryna Monzul let the situation slide and didn’t point to the penalty spot. The video referee team also did not tell the referee that she should watch the scene again in the review area.

This drives former referee Urs Meier upset. “What’s that arm doing up there? It has no business there, so you take a big risk. The movement is not natural. There have been penalties that are very different from this one. That’s exactly what the VAR is there for,” says Meier of the Swiss daily Blick and continues: “That there are no more cases like Maradona’s Hand of God or Thierry Henry’s handball against Ireland.

The DFB-Elf lost the hard-fought final 1-2 after extra time. First, England’s Ella Toone gave the “Three Lions” the lead (62′), Lina Magull (79′) equalized. Chloe Kelly (112th) scored the decisive goal for England’s first women’s European title in extra time.
