16 years after leaving Real
After the termination of his contract at Olympiakos Piraeus, five-time Champions League winner Marcelo is returning to his roots: on Friday, the Brazilian first division club Fluminense announced the 34-year-old’s signing. “The time has come to return,” the club from the coastal metropolis of Rio de Janeiro announced the new signing on the left-back, who signed a contract until the end of 2024 with an option for a further year.
After two years as a professional, Marcelo left the Fluminense training club in early 2007 for 6.5 million euros in the direction of Real Madrid, where he became a club legend. He made 546 appearances (38 goals) for the “Royals” and won 25 titles during that time, including six league titles and four Club World Cups. Real’s contract was not renewed last summer and Marcelo moved to Olympiakos, where he ended his contract early last weekend after just ten appearances.

“It’s difficult to express what this moment means to me. For many years I dreamed of returning to my origins, to the team that trained me and taught me everything I know about football,” said Marcelo, who is due to arrive in Rio de Janeiro in about two weeks and also for the Copa Libertadores is announced.
