Two years after leaving FC Schalke 04, Jonjoe Kenny is drawn back to the Bundesliga. The English right-back joins Hertha BSC.
The capital club announced this on Tuesday. Kenny is moving from Everton FC to Berlin on a free transfer. His contract with the Premier League club expires on June 30.
“In Jonjoe we have gained a new signing who will bring dynamism and speed to our game. He has experience in the Premier League and Bundesliga and at the age of 25 he is still a long way from the end of his development. We felt it in the talks how excited he is for Hertha BSC,” said sports director Fredi Bobic.
Kenny said: “The club and the people in charge have put a lot of effort into my life. I’m happy to play for this club in the future. I’m looking forward to the club, the fans and the city!”
Hertha BSC: Jonjoe Kenny occupies problem position
Kenny’s contract with Hertha BSC is dated until the summer of 2025, as the club has confirmed. After Filip Uremovic, he is the second summer signing of the almost relegated team.
Kenny should occupy the problem position on the right side of defense at Hertha BSC. Veteran Peter Pekarik recently extended his contract, but is already 35 years old. Youngster Julian Eitschberger has only played a few minutes with the pros so far.
Many setbacks since leaving FC Schalke 04
Kenny was loaned to Schalke in the 2019/2020 season and became a crowd favorite there. However, the 25-year-old did not start the bitter transition to the second division with the Royal Blues.
The Liverpool native had suffered a number of setbacks since leaving Schalke.
He was never able to assert himself as an undisputed regular player at Everton FC, and was only eleven times in the starting line-up for the Toffees in the Premier League last season. A loan to Celtic in the 2020/2021 season was also not very successful.
