Ex-player looks back on “wasted” season

Marwin Hitz was a regular keeper at Borussia Dortmund for around six months. Then a new number one was put in front of him with Gregor Kobel. The veteran, who is currently under contract with FC Basel, now commented on the competition at BVB with his Swiss compatriot.

In the summer of 2018, Hitz moved from FC Augsburg to Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer. But he only became a regular keeper much later – and for a very short time.

“The two and a half years that I worked for it were worth it to be number one at BVB in the end,” said Hitz in an interview with “Spox” and noted: “Maybe I’ll go into Dortmund history because I was the last goalkeeper to win against Bayern.”

For the 2021/2022 season, BVB then signed Gregor Kobel, a new number one from VfB Stuttgart.

Demotion at BVB “difficult to accept”

Although Hitz had been clearly communicated that he should move back into the second tier, the goalkeeper was disappointed.

“It was made clear to me very quickly in the summer and communicated honestly that a clear number one would be signed. It was difficult to accept that and thus be downgraded again,” Hitz admitted openly: “If you achieve the goal for which you If you worked for so long and finally achieved it, then suddenly you lose again, then it doesn’t feel nice. Then it’s not easy to find the energy again to attack again anyway.”

Nevertheless, Hitz stayed with BVB, although his contract expired in summer 2022. “Of course, as BVB’s number one and a player without a contract in the summer, there would have been other options for me,” said the two-time national player, who added: “This final season at BVB might have been a bit wasted for me.”

His end at BVB was “somehow unfortunate, but the club was 100 percent right in choosing Gregor,” emphasized Hitz.
