Ex-national player Grings wants to train men’s team

Zurich (AP) – The former national soccer player Inka Grings is still aiming for a coaching job in men’s soccer.

“That is and will remain my goal. I was always very ambitious as a player, and certainly a little more as a coach,” said the coach of the Swiss women’s first division club FC Zurich in an interview published on Saturday on the homepage of the German Football Association (DFB ). From 2019 to 2020, the 43-year-old was the first woman to train a men’s team in one of the four top divisions in Germany with the regional division SV Straelen.

In their opinion, it is particularly difficult to convince the decision-makers in the clubs that women can also train men’s teams. This is the big challenge, said the two-time European champion. “I am of the opinion that gender should not decide whether someone is a good trainer. Ultimately, only people’s quality, competence and authority should and should be decisive,” she emphasized.

Grings has been a trainer at FC Zurich since February and has three men on her trainer team. With her team, she was one point ahead of Servette Geneva at half time of the championship. “The second half of the season will definitely be exciting. Our goal is to win every game and win the Swiss championship,” said the 96-time national player, who played for FC Zurich from 2011 to 2013 herself.
