Ex-javelin throwing world champion Johannes Vetter declares that he will not be taking part in the European Cup

The European Cup in Portugal will take place without javelin thrower Johannes Vetter. The former world champion doesn’t feel fit enough yet.

Former world champion Johannes Vetter has to forego his planned start at the European Throwing Cup in Portugal and thus suffer another setback. Vetter was actually supposed to compete in Leiria on Sunday, but canceled at short notice.

“Due to the problems with my elbow and because I was still a bit worn out from the training camp, we said that it was a little too early,” explained the 30-year-old to “Sport1”.

Vetter was unable to qualify for the World Championships in Budapest last year after long-term health problems and would like to take part in the Olympics in Paris this year. “I would have liked to throw and tick off the Olympic standard, but health simply comes first,” said Vetter. The international standard for a pitch in Paris is 85.50 meters.

The 2017 world champion is confident that this is possible for him after his long-term shoulder problem. “We now believe that we have found the solution and worked intensively on my shoulder blade in the fall,” Vetter said recently.

The German squad in Portugal includes Max Dehning as the second javelin thrower. The 19-year-old from Leverkusen recently surprised in Halle with a throw of 90.20 meters.
