For Stuttgart left-back Maximilian Mittelstädt, VfB’s victory over 1. FC Union Berlin had a very personal meaning.

“For me it was my own little derby. That’s why it’s a little extra motivation to win here. “I’m even happier and have a bit of a blue and white heart,” said the 26-year-old Berlin native on Saturday evening in the Köpenick Stadium.

Until last summer, Mittelstädt played for Union’s city rivals Hertha BSC. Not just with the professionals, he has been through Hertha’s youth teams since 2012. Until then, he had been denied a victory in the Alte Försterei.

He also celebrated his starting eleven debut in the Bundesliga for VfB on Saturday. “Family and friends were all there. I spoke to them a lot after the game. They are all very happy. “It’s a nice feeling,” said Mittelstädt.

A longer stay at home was not an option. We went back to Stuttgart to regenerate.
