Berlin’s Hany Mukhtar was the first German to be voted Most Valuable Player in Major League Soccer. The 27-year-old attacker received 48.03 percent of the votes, beating Austin FC’s Sebastián Driussi (26) by a wide margin.
Mukhtar first German: All MLS MVP award winners since 1996
Mukhtar finished as the North American league’s top scorer with 23 goals, assisted seven more and was a central player for his club Nashville SC. He was involved in 58 percent of all goals as a scorer or assist provider, he scored 21 of the goals in the last 22 games of the season.
In the play-offs, however, Nashville again failed earlier than hoped, in the first round there was a 0-1 loss at Los Angeles Galaxy. Mukhtar, who trained at Hertha BSC, has been active in the MLS since January 2020.
“It’s the greatest moment of my career. Being the third German athlete to win the MVP award after Nowitzki and Draisaitl makes me incredibly proud! The league is getting stronger and is on the right track,” said Mukthar der “Bild” newspaper. Due to his strong season, the attacker had long been considered a candidate for Hansi Flick’s provisional World Cup list, but is now not on it.

“Of course we would have been happy to see Hany in the national team jersey again, after all he wore it for years in the youth teams of the DFB. As MVP and top scorer for Nashville, he definitely made a lot of arguments and, in my opinion, would have been a win for the DFB with his offensive qualities,” said Mukhtar’s advisor Florian Goll. “I hope that Hany’s historic title will finally give the still underestimated MLS even more impetus in Germany.”
